Having children later in life

Topic: Nowadays, more and more people decide to have children later in their life. What are the reasons? Do advantages of this outweigh disadvantages?

Outline:

    Introduction:

Background statement: the fact that maternal age is growing older by the year has raised numerous concerns

Thesis statement: Though this trend is increasingly popular due to some economic and social factors. It has both pros and cons for to-be parents to take into consideration.  

Reasons People have children later in their life:

People’s primary concerns in life have been shifting from family settlement to career achievement à decide not to tie the knot until financially stable

Thanks to gender equality, a rising number of women are able to enjoy education and join labor market à delaying getting married.

The growing popularity of individualism and non-commitment life à spend their youth enjoying life rather than confine themselves to parental responsibilities

    Advantages of having children at a later age

Well prepared in financial and rational terms

+ better to support and educate the young

+ be able to spend more time with children since financial concerns are no longer such a burden

Have more time for hobbies and passions before settling down

+ more opportunities to travel, hone various skills, learn new things

+ become better versions of parents to nurture and educate children since their life is enriched with knowledge and practical skills.

    Disadvantages of having children later in their life:

 Pose potential health risks for both mother and the child

+ scientific research has shown that the older his mother is the higher the rate of a child suffering from Down Syndrome becomes

Huge generation gap between parents and children

May cause lack of young labor force in the long term as some families only have one child (E.g. Japan, South Korea, European nations)

    My opinion:

Disadvantages outstrip advantages

–  Mother and baby’s health should be the number one priority. A disabled child can be an extremely heavy burden to shoulder and cannot be undone

–  Results in disruptive family bonding due to the generation gap à family tie may become vulnerable or even loosen

    Conclusion:

–  Delay in giving birth can be attributed to many factors relating to economic and social changes in the present days

–  Though this trend brings about some positive outcomes, such unconventional decision may raise serious health concerns as well as result in many family conflicts.
