OUTLINES for IELTS WRITING
1. The discussion essay (cause – effect / problem – solution)
a. Four-paragraph essay (2 body paragraphs)
Introduction
– One side of the discussion essay: ‘There are those who argue that …’
– The other side of the discussion: ‘Other people, however, maintain that …’
– Thesis statement: ‘This is a complex issue and my belief is that …’
Body 1 (pointing out 3 reasons / problems)
– Reason / Problem 1: ‘One of the causes of this is …’ / ‘It is cause for concern that …’
– Reason / Problem 2: ‘Another reason for … is …’ / ‘Another worrying trend is …’
– Reason / Problem 3: ‘Additionally, what brings about … is …’ / ‘… is also a significant problem’
Body 2 (pointing out 3 effects / solutions)
– Effect / Solution 1: ‘… has led to …’ / ‘Steps must be taken in order to deal with…’
– Effect / Solution 2: ‘Besides, … has resulted in …’ / ‘Another way to overcome this problem would be…’
– Effect / Solution 3: ‘… also gives rise to …’ / ‘The … situation could be improved if …’
Conclusion
– Summarize the main ideas: ‘In conclusion, it is clear that …’
– Give your opinion (if you haven’t given it already): ‘My personal view is that …’
b. Five-paragraph essay (3 body paragraphs)
Introduction
– One side of the discussion: ‘Many people are of the view that …’
– The other side of the discussion: ‘However, other people argue that …’
– Thesis statement: ‘This essay will discuss the reasons why … and its consequences.’
Body 1 (the 1st reason / problem)
– ‘The immediate cause of this is …’
Body 2 (the 2nd reason / problem)
– ‘In addition, this can be explained by …’
Body 3 (pointing out 2 effects / solutions)
– ‘… has brought about …’ / ‘One proposed solution is to …’
– ‘Additionally, … leads to …’ / ‘An alternative way to solve the problem of… is …’
Conclusion
– Summarize the main ideas: ‘In summary, my belief is …’
– Give your opinion: ‘For this reason, I suggest that …’
2. The argumentative essay (advantage / disadvantage)
A. Four-paragraph essay (2 body paragraphs)
· Introduction
– One side of the argument: ‘There are clear advantages in …’
– The other side of the argument: ‘At the same time, however, there are possible drawbacks to …’
– Thesis statement: ‘I will discuss both these advantages and disadvantages in this essay.’
· Body 1 (pointing out 3 advantages)
– Advantage 1: ‘The first and foremost benefit of this is …’
– Advantage 2: ‘In addition, …’
– Advantage 3: ‘What is more, …’
· Body 2 (pointing out 3 disadvantages)
– Disadvantage 1: ‘There are some disadvantages to … , and perhaps the most significant drawback is …’
– Disadvantage 2: ‘Another disadvantage is …’
– Disadvantage 3: ‘Besides, …’
· Conclusion
– Summarize the main ideas: ‘If we look at both sides of the argument …’
– Give your opinion: ‘My own personal point of view is that …’
b. Five-paragraph essay (3 body paragraphs)

· Body 3 (pointing out 2 disadvantages)
– ‘There are, however, strong arguments against …’
– ‘Additionally, …’
· Conclusion
– Summarize the main ideas: ‘This is a complex issue with no clear answers. …’
– Give your opinion: ‘I am of the opinion that …’
Việc nắm format của các dạng writing task 2 chỉ hữu ích và thật sự trơ thành kiến thức nằm lòng, giúp vận dụng được nhanh chóng và hiệu quả trong kỳ thi Khi các bạn cố gắng luyện viết hằng ngày, thành một thói quen. Tất nhiên việc suy nghĩ, tìm ý, tìm từ để viết về một topic nào đó thì hiển nhiên không khó khăn gì. Tuy nhiên chỉ trong khoảng thời gian là 40 phút, vừa phải suy nghĩ ý, rồi format, rồi từ vựng.., là chuyện không hề đơn giản nếu như bạn không luyện viết hằng ngày.
