Solve the problem of crime

Writing task 2: Prison is the common way in most countries to solve the problem of crime. However, a more effective solution is to provide people with better education. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

OUTLINE for IELTS WRITING TASK 2 – 30.01.2016 (problem of crime)

1. Benefits of giving offenders sentences of imprisonment

➢     When criminals serve their prison sentences, they lose their freedom and are separated from family and friends => prison acts as a deterrent to make people think more carefully before breaking the law

➢     Imprisonment prevents law-breakers from committing further crimes while they are incarcerated => criminals are removed from the general population

➢     Confinement makes the sentencing process less complicated, i.e. the number of years of imprisonment is in accordance with the severity of the crime committed => allows the government to scale punishments more effectively

      2. Advantages of providing wrong-doers with better education:

➢     Education and rehabilitation programs help inmates get their minds off criminal behavior and do something productive while serving their sentences. [give example(s)]

➢     Prisoners are given a chance to retrain or develop a deeper understanding of correct moral behavior => reduce the possibility of recidivism

➢     Offenders have the opportunity to learn useful skills for their future => they may be able to find a decent job after release => rehabilitate law-breakers and help them become good citizens
